POOLE CASTLE COVER PIRATES 46
WOLVERHAMPTON WOLVES 44
A battling performance from a full strength Poole side saw them overcome second place Wolverhampton by the narrowest of margins 46 – 44 in their attempt to climb away from the foot of the Elite League table.
Pirates got off to a slow start to trail by four points after two races but never once let Wolverhampton get the upper hand in what was to prove a very close fought contest.
Both sides held the lead at various times in the match with Poole overcoming a 1 – 5 defeat in the twelfth race with a 5 -1 of their own thanks to Hans Andersen and Chris Holder in Heat 13. This levelled the scoreline at 39 – 39 and set the match up for nerve wracking finish.
Heat 14 saw the Pirates take a two point lead but only after their skipper Bjarne Pedersen had been involved in a high speed crash with Wolves rider Tai Woffinden. Tempers flared as both riders extricated themselves from the safety fence but what originally looked to be a nasty incident soon cooled down and both riders were able to walk back to the pits unhurt.
Pirates just needed to take three points from the final race to chalk up a great victory and Hans Andersen and Chris Holder duly obliged with a fine piece of riding to grab the points to the cheers of the success starved Poole fans.
